Does Spending Money on Scrapbooking Make You Happy?

This entry is part 32 of 66 in the series My Scrap Happy Project

Each Monday, I discuss my Scrap Happy project based on Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.

Next week, I kick off my new monthly blog hop tied to The Happiness Project.

Today, I am going to discuss Buying Some Happiness. I was a bit skeptical of this chapter because we all know that buying something can give us a quick boost but it doesn’t usually last. Rubin’s main goals under buying some happiness are balanced. In fact they remind me of my daughter’s piggy bank, which has four slots: save, donate, invest, and spend. It might not be the perfect parallel, but it works for me.

Let’s start with spend or indulging in a modest splurge. Here’s what I came up with:

IPod speakers. I have an IPod but never bought speakers because I had an old set from my discman (remember those?). Well, I finally hooked those speakers up to my IPod but they were broke. I tossed them and decided to buy speakers for my IPod. I only spent about $20 on the speakers (they were on sale) and they are not the best speakers, but they do the job. I have them set-up in my scrapbook area so that I can listen to music and podcasts without headphones.

I bought an acid-free journaling book so that I could write my stories on the go. I considered just emailing stories to myself, using evernote, or something like that, but decided on a notebook so that I could literally tear the story out and add it to a page. Unfortunately, I haven’t told many stories in my journal and I have yet to add any of them to a layout, but I am glad I made this decision. If I were a digi scrapper, I would probably opt for an electronic version of this system.

  • I have plans to buy printed photographs of my daughter for family members. Most of my family uses email, but a few older relatives do not. For the cost of a couple of bucks, I can send them quite a few snapshots via the postal service. I have not been real good at this am getting ready to send thank-you cards for my daughter’s birthday, so I am prepping photos for those cards.

One of the challenges of spending money to buy happiness is actually making time to indulge in your modest splurge. I have to take time to scrapbook in order to enjoy my speakers. I have to take time to write my stories in order to justify not only buying but carrying around this journal. I have to take time select photos and mail them. So spending money also means spending time to enjoy what you have purchased.

What kind of modest splurges do you indulge in as it relates to scrapbooking? Do those splurges make you happy? Comment below or join the conversation on facebook or twitter.

    Inspiring Things from Non-Scrappy Sources

A popular blog post format is a list of 5 things or 10 things that the writer is currently digging in some way. I like these posts because the writer has found a lot of cool things to share. Some of the things I then want. Some of the things can be used simply for inspiration. Well, in the spirit of minimalist scrapbooking, I wanted to point you to The Simple Dollar. Recently, Trent Hamm has begun one of these style of posts only his is different in that there is nothing to buy. He collects 10 inspiring things each week but they aren’t items to buy. They are things like a video from TED or an inspirational quote or a memory from his childhood. Kudos to Trent for doing the things list differently. Enjoy.

    Coming soon to Minimalist Scrapbooking:

    • An interview with Tammy Dailor of Your Memory Connection
    • My complete Scrapbook on the Road
    • My Scrapbooking Expenses for May and June

8 Scrapbooking Blogs You Should be Reading

This entry is part 29 of 45 in the series Books & Blogs Review

Each Thursday I review a book or blog related to scrapbooking. I thought it would be a good idea to let you know why I bother reviewing books & blogs. Today, I will focus on blogs and I’ll write about books in a couple of weeks.

The internet is great in that you can find pretty much anything you want. It is also great in that the tools needed to build your own website are more accessible than ever. If I want to teach a scrapbook class, I can use this platform right here. I don’t have to wait for Big Picture Classes to solicit me to be their teacher nor do I have to pitch them in order to teach a class (don’t worry, I have enough on my plate that teaching any scrapbooking classes is not something I am seriously considering at the moment). That being said, anyone can set up a website, declare (or imply) themselves an expert and start selling or giving away content.

This means there is a lot of content on the web. (Duh!) But a lot of content, means there is a lot to sort through. By reading Books & Blogs, you eliminate some of the sorting. We might not even realize how good or bad something is until we closely examine it and that is what I do in this series. I have unsubscribed to a few websites after reviewing them on here. I thought I enjoyed must of what they posted, but realized that they really weren’t for me. They weren’t necessarily bad, but just not for me. I won’t tell you which ones because I want you to read the reviews, check out their site, and then make the decision for yourself. [I realize this might be somewhat of a contradiction, but I do want you to make up your own mind.] I do this because I know what I like and what I dislike. I also check back in with sites I unsubscribe from periodically or I follow them in other ways (twitter or facebook). I realize that blogs evolve and life sometimes gets in the way so I don’t want to write any blogger off completely.

It might be helpful to you, dear readers, to know what I like about blogs overall and I will share with you some of favorite blogs I have reviewed so far:

    • I like blogs that make me think. There are a lot of blogs that do this some of the time, but I’m still on the lookout for a blog that does this consistently within the scrapbooking niche.
    • I like blogs that offer me a doable challenge even if i don’t actively participate like the weekly photo challenges from Simple Scrapper.
    • I like blogs that consistently provide good content to the point that I can’t decide whether to retweet, comment on, or both. I have this happy problem a lot from Your Memory Connection and Get it Scrapped.
    • I like blogs that consistently inspire me like from Ali Edwards.
    • I like blogs that showcase the bad along with the good, like Cathy Zielske does.

Then there are those blogs that I haven’t yet reviewed but are on my radar as one’s to definitely watch:

A Collection of Posts on Scrapbooking Norms

This entry is part 16 of 86 in the series Scrapworthy Lives Results

Over the past few weeks, I’ve discussed the sources of scrapbooking norms, including the internet, idea books and magazines, scrapbooking celebrities, television shows, classes, industry workers, manufacturers, and scrapbooking peers.

Most of my respondents, however, say there are few, if any, rules of the hobby, though there are definitely norms related to the purpose of scrapbooking:

Scrapbooking is also commonly discussed in terms of deviance:

Next Wednesday, I’ll begin talking about how people change as they become scrapbookers. Stay tuned…

As always, if you have any questions or comments you can find me on facebook, twitter, or send me an email at stephaniemedleyrath at gmail dot com.
